Geolocation and Smart Phones = Immediate Consumer Decisions

Geolocation and the growing technology available on smart phones will soon allow customers to find, research, and pay for a product all through their small, hand held device. This is incredibly exciting, for business owners and account executives know that getting a quick decision on a deal or purchase is the best way to ensure that they win a customer or business clients.

Let's walk through a brief example to highlight where the technology is today, and where it may grow in the future.

I was out running between meetings and found myself with an hour or two to grab a coffee and catch up on some work. To avoid traffic, I decided to head near my final destination for the day and set up shop in that area. I was unfamiliar with the area, so I simply searched "coffee shopsnear location x. " I was given a couple of spots near my final destination, clicked on the place that appealed to me and set my gps navigation to take me there. When I got to the location, the "checked-in" using my foursquare account to see if any deals were available. The final step that is not yet available to the public, but will be in the near future, is swiping my phone to pay for the transaction.

What is the lesson from this story? If you are not properly taking advantage of online media, your business will not show up in search results and consumers that operate as I do will not find you! So take some time to learn (and experiment with) the geolocation tools that are available and being aquamaps data sources: GBIF by millions of customers.
